Raila’s Bodyguard Narrates Ordeal After Abduction by Police

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga’s bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, has recounted his experience at the hands of police officers who he claimed abducted and detained him for three days.

In an NTV interview on Saturday, July 22, Ogeta narrated that he was blindfolded and taken to an unknown location where he was kept in an empty room without food.

He asserted that the officers majorly wanted to know Raila’s whereabouts and his plans for the protests.

“The room I was taken to had nothing other than two beds. It wasn’t a good environment to eat anyway,” he stated, adding that he only survived on water.

During the detention, Ogeta noted that the officers pressured him into telling them the Azimo leader’s itinerary and route plans for the anti-government protest. This, he asserts, went on for three days but he stood firm and never disclosed any information.

The bodyguard added that the officers hoped that detaining him for longer would compel him into disclosing the information they wanted. Despite the ordeal, he confirmed that the officers didn’t instill any bodily harm on him.

“What irritated me the most was the repeated question of where was Raila going today, where he would be tomorrow and the itinerary. I kept telling them that I don’t have the itinerary because I didn’t even expect him to go to the protests because the last time I was with him, he was not feeling well,” Ogeta stated.

In the course of the detention, the officers threatened him but he insisted that his role to the former Prime Minister team is just security. He added that he was not involved in planning any program thus he was oblivious of the answers to their questions.

He was later dropped at Ruai, a location that the bodyguard affirms he only realised after asking a random passerby. He adds that he couldn’t recall the police station nor the location where the abductors detained him.

Reports, however, alleged that Ogeta was detained at Utawala Police Station.

Ogeta was among individuals associated with Raila Odinga who were arrested during the three days of anti-government protests on Wednesday July 19.

Others included Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Kilifi County Speaker Teddy Mwambire, Ngei Ward MCA Redson Onyango amd MCA mabatini Wilfred Odallo.

Azimio announced the protests will continue the coming weeks adding that going forward, the opposition will hold protests one day a week. The next protest is scheduled for Wednesday, July 26, 2023.
