Presidential escort team members sustained injuries after their black Lexus 570 rolled around the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha, Nakuru County, on  Wednesday, June 21.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a source privy to the matter confirmed the incident, adding that the vehicle lost control while speeding at a sharp bend.

The source indicated that the vehicle sped past him before ultimately rolling over at the sharp bend. The members were reportedly rushed to a Naivasha-based hospital to receive medical attention.

Elite General Service Unit (GSU) officers were dispatched to cordon the scene and calm the situation. Eyewitnesses were also barred from either surrounding the vehicle or capturing pictures of the incident.

Details of the accident, however, remain scanty. No official information about the incident had been divulged at the time of publishing this article.

The source intimated to this writer that President William Ruto flew to Naivasha using a chopper ahead of the WRC launch and hence was not present in the convoy.

Efforts to reach National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Resila Onyango were futile as calls went unanswered.

Hours earlier, in Naivasha, the head of state flagged off the 2023 Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) World Rally Championship edition.

The event is slated to begin on Thursday, June 22, and will run until Sunday, June 25.

During the WRC event, Ruto was also photographed driving himself in Nakuru while donning the Safari Rally attire.

At the same time, a driver was arraigned in court on Wednesday, June 21, for allegedly obstructing First Lady Rachel Ruto’s convoy along University Way in Nairobi.

During the court proceedings, the suspect defended himself by claiming that he waited for 15 minutes after the convoy passed but was still taken into custody.
