Members of Parliament have praised the late Supreme Court judge, Justice Stella Arach-Amoko, as an extraordinary member of the bench who promoted the rule of law in Uganda.
On Wednesday, Parliament held a special session to pay tribute to the judge, who died last Saturday (June 17) in Kampala.
The motion to pay tribute to Arach-Amoko was moved by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and seconded by Opposition Chief Whip John Baptist Nambeshe on behalf of the Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
The Government described the late judge as a true legal practitioner who dedicated her career life to the Judiciary and serving her nation.
“She was an extraordinary champion of justice whose career record was stainless,” said Nabbanja.
“She made her mark while at the commercial division of the High Court. It was during her tenure as head of the commercial court that alternative dispute resolution strategies such as mediation and arbitration were introduced.”
On his part, Nambeshe described her as a transparent justice of the High Court whose judgments will forever be remembered by Ugandans.
He said Arach-Amoko was one of the rare crop of justices of the High Court that believed in constitutionalism and democracy.
“She established herself as a notable authority in election petitions. Her judgements, for instance, have since laid very strong foundation for electoral jurisprudence in this country,” said Nambeshe.
urt judge will lie in State until Thursday morning and thereafter, it will leave the parliamentary building for Adjumani District.
