Former Tottenham left-back Danny Rose has revealed details of a recent chat with Harry Kane and believes the striker will ask to leave the club ‘if the right team comes in’.
The England skipper has enjoyed an excellent individual season, netting in a record-equalling 24th Premier League match against Aston Villa on Saturday – though Spurs fell to a 2-1 defeat and are at risk of missing out on a place in Europe altogether next season.
‘I texted Harry probably 10 days ago, just seeing how he was, and then obviously I asked him what’s happening. He didn’t give too much away and then I saw him after the Man United game and we had 20 minutes and we spoke,’ revealed Rose to Astro SuperSport.
‘He’s very much clued on about what he’s going to do next season and, for me, I don’t think Daniel [Levy] holds the cards with Harry at the minute.
‘I know he’s got to run a business, but how could you possibly deprive somebody who has given you everything for the past how many years? He’s scored goal after goal.
‘He was promised a move [previously], he had a gentleman’s agreement to go to Manchester City two years ago but Spurs broke that at the last minute.
‘So, for me, I don’t see how Daniel has the upper hand in this situation.
‘If the right team comes in for Harry – that Harry wants to go and play for – I feel as if Harry will knock on that door and say, “You’ve got to let me leave.”’
Asked if Kane has a better chance of winning silverware away from north London, Rose continued: ‘Depending on the team. I remember when I was still at the club and we were having a conversation and he said, “Gosh, if I was at City I’d score 45 goals!”
‘And I remember laughing and thinking, “Yeah, alright Harry, calm down” but actually looking at it now I’m thinking he’s right, he’d easily score 45 goals.
‘I’m a big [Manchester] United fan and I know there’s rumours and it’s probably obvious they need a number nine, and I know they won the Carabao Cup and they’re in the FA Cup final, but for me I don’t see that as a guarantee that Harry is going to win trophies there.
‘Obviously he can’t go to City [because of Erling Haaland], Chelsea absolutely tarnishes everything he’s achieved at Tottenham and Arsenal is just a no go.
‘It just depends where [he can go] and if none of the options were what he wanted, I’d happily run my contract down for a year and I’d see if Real Madrid wanted to take me on a free transfer if I was him. He’s not in a bad position but I’m intrigued to see what happens at the end of the season.’
