Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba aka MK, the presidential advisor on special operations, has expressed his total support to KCCA for the ongoing road rehabilitation and maintenance plans to realise increase in the paved road coverage in Kampala capital city. He said that we all want the best for our capital city and pledged to martial all efforts and have sustained engagements with key stakeholders so that the smart city aspirations are achieved.
The General made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon when he paid a courtsey visit to City Hall where he met the KCCA Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka and the lead city engineers, Justus Akankwasa and Maurice Karainima. The General later made a spot inspection of the streets in the industrial area; 6th, 7th and 8th street accompanied by the KCCA team.
The KCCA Executive Director welcomed the General to City Hall, saying the strategic partnership will be very beneficial to the smart city aspirations. She explained that there is urgency in working on the roads because while Kampala roads cover 2110km, only approximately 30% are paved roads. The Government has recently embarked on a concerted rehabilitation drive of the old stock of roads which have outlived their service time. In addition there is ongoing regular road maintenance in all the five divisions to meet the national service delivery standards of zero tolerance to potholes. She however said maintenance is hinged on availability of funding
Kisaka further explained that Kampala metropolitan area produces 64% of Uganda’s GDP and 75% of tax revenues. It is, therefore, imperative to rehabilitate the roads, which will, in turn, increase productivity and the value of the properties. Bad roads dont only increase traffic jams but also kill many man hours every single day while affecting property values.
Kisaka reiterated the smart city agenda, saying it embraces the aspirations in the 2020-2025 KCCA strategic plan. The Smart City agenda is hinged on three pillars; leveraging the use of technology in service delivery, infrastructure development, and people’s well-being.
The government has embarked on rehabilitation of the industrial area roads under the Kampala City Roads Reconstruction, covering roads in five divisions. This is in addition to other projects in the pipeline that will cover the greater Kampala metropolitan area and affect the roads in the neighbouring districts.
General Muhozi has come to lend his full support to KCCA in the war against potholes in the city.
