KABALE, UGANDA: The Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (MK) Tuesday commissioned an Emergency Medical Services water boat ambulance on Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale District, Western Uganda.
The event is a series of activities the former Land Forces Commander will officiate ahead of the Katuna-Gatuna border re-opening Thanksgiving ceremony and Rukundo Egumeho concert tomorrow (Wednesday).
Gen Muhoozi who is also the first son arrived in Kabale town at around 01:30 pm and was welcomed by a section of local leaders amidst tight security deployment ranging from Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF, Uganda Police and Special Forces Command.
He later visited Lake Bunyonyi where he commissioned and handed the boat ambulance to the Kabale district leadership led by the Kabale district deputy chief administrative officer Ritah Elizabeth Bwiringiro.
Gen Muhoozi said that the boat ambulance will ease access to medical care amongst people living around the lake.
The Kabale District Health Officer Dr Gilbert Arineitwe Mateeka and the Kabale district chairperson Nelson Nshangabasheija said that the ambulance help in health response emergencies and enhancing maternal health services and immunization outreaches for people who seek medical services along Lake Bunyonyi communities.
Last week the ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Ainebyoona said that the ambulance boat will be stationed at Bwama Health Centre III adding that it is among the 11 boat ambulances that were procured by the government with support from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), to help in the evacuation of patients in need of emergency medical care on major water bodies across the country.
Shortly after the commissioning of the boat ambulance, Gen Keinerugaba visited the Kabale municipal stadium and laid a wreath at a monument for the three fallen Front for National Salvation (FRONASA).
Meanwhile, Kigezi Select football team Tuesday afternoon defeated Rwanda Select football team by 4:2 penalties after a 1:1 normal time draw to lift the MK movement trophy.
On the other hand, all 38 participants in the 25-kilometre Katuna-Kabale town bicycle race that was conducted earlier in the day received bicycles, mattresses and flasks among other gifts from the organizers.
The Uganda-Rwanda borders were closed on February 27, 2019. At the time, Rwandan President, Paul Kagame accused Ugandan authorities of spying on Rwanda, abducting Rwandan citizens and locking them up in non-designated areas, as well as hosting and facilitating dissidents who have declared war on the Kigali administration.
After close to 3 years of no business at the borders, Rwanda reopened them on 31st January 2022.
The border re-opening followed a visit by the then Commander of Land Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to Rwanda where he met President Paul Kagame over the long-existing misunderstanding between the 2 countries.
