Frenkie de Jong is happy at Barcelona despite Manchester United’s continued interest in the Barcelona star.

United spent three months trying to sign the Netherlands international last summer but failed to get a deal over the line.

While Barcelona were prepared to sell the midfielder to alleviate some of the financial pressure on the club, de Jong was reluctant to leave with the deal also complicated by the issues of his deferred wages.

Erik ten Hag remains eager to bring his former Ajax starlet to Old Trafford and he is once again among their summer transfer targets.

United hope to seal a return to the Champions League to bolster their hopes of convincing him to make the move.

But the Guardian report that de Jong is not seeking a move and is currently content with life at the Camp Nou. That situation however could change come the end of the season.

Barcelona are currently on course to win their first Spanish titles since 2019, seven points clear of Real Madrid with de Jong playing a key role.

After failing to get a deal done last summer, United signed Casemiro from Real Madrid with the Brazil international enjoying a superb first season in English football.

But former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes de Jong can still play a vital role, adding United are unlikely to be the only club interested in signing him.

‘You would love to see Frenkie de Jong play at Old Trafford, he can play deeper as a pivot or a little bit further forward which I think is his best position,’ the former England international said.

‘A fantastic footballer, can dribble and I think United fans will be looking out for him today but I’m sure all the big teams in the Premier League would love to have this guy because he makes you that much better.’

Ten Hag meanwhile made no secret of his continued admiration of the player.

‘He is a fantastic player playing out from the back, you always have time so it was a pleasure to work with him,’ the United boss said ahead of United’s Europa League play-off tie against Barcelona.
