Domenico Tedesco, a former manager of RB Leipzig, has been named Belgium’s new head coach to succeed Roberto Martinez, the nation’s football association announced on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old will sign a contract that will last until after Euro 2024, according to the Belgian FA, and his first match in charge will be their opening qualifier against Sweden in Stockholm on March 24.

Tedesco, who was raised in Germany but was born in Italy, has also served as a coach for Spartak Moscow and Schalke 04.

“For me, it is a great honour to be the new head coach of Belgium,” Tedesco said in a statement.

“I’m really looking forward to the task and I’m extremely motivated. I had a very good feeling right from the first conversation.”

After Belgium lost in the opening round of the World Cup in Qatar in December, Martinez resigned from the position.

He is now the manager of Portugal.

The contract talks between Tedesco and Leipzig had interfered with Belgium’s efforts to identify Tedesco.

Although he was sacked in September, sources told Reuters on Tuesday that he is still entitled to an estimated one million euros ($1.07 million) in pay.
