Man Utd are reportedly trying to sign Netherlands international Wout Weghorst and the loan deal for the forward is now ‘almost complete’.

The 30-year-old has a bit of Premier League experience as he joined Burnley for £12m from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg last January.

Weghorst flopped at Turf Moor. He only scored two goals in 20 games as the Clarets were relegated.

The forward left Burnley on loan in the summer as he joined Turkish side Besiktas. He has fared better for them as he has netted nine times in 18 appearances.

The Dutchman took this form into the World Cup in Qatar. He netted a brace against Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Man Utd are in the market for a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in November.

It has been established that a short-term addition is likely before they sign a long-term replacement for Ronaldo in the summer.

Weghorst is still contracted to Burnley and their manager – Vincent Kompany – recently congratulated his player for his World Cup form.

“I think first of all congratulations to him you know because scoring two goals in a World Cup is something exceptional,” Kompany said.

“Especially the way he did it as well.”

When asked about potentially recalling Weghorst, Kompany added: “At the moment there is nothing new I can say. I think in these type of situations they play out a little bit later.

“I think he’s done his country proud and that in itself, I know as a player, as an individual, he’ll feel really proud about that.”

He continued: “Like I said these situations have to play out a little bit. I’m focused on the group I have right now. I’ve never been told that the situation was that we had a clause in there, so.

“But I get it, he scored at the World Cup so obviously you’re going to ask the question.”

United have been heavily linked with Vincent Aboubakar in recent days but Foot Mercato are reporting that they are ‘close to signing’ Weghorst.

Man Utd have ‘found happiness’ in Weghorst and the loan deal is ‘almost complete between the different parties’.

His loan at Besiktas is seemingly already over as he waved goodbye to their supporters after scoring against Kasimpasa on Saturday.

The report adds that for Weghorst, ‘this is an opportunity that is difficult to refuse’ as he is given an opportunity to make up for a disappointing spell at Burnley.

Erik ten Hag ‘will rejoice at the arrival’ of Weghorst, who will provide competition for Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Both players have been in great form this term and Rashford has scored in seven consecutive games at Old Trafford.
