Manchester United are holding ‘ongoing’ talks with goalkeeper David De Gea regarding a new contract, journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.
The Lowdown: De Gea enjoying good season
The Spaniard has been a truly great servant for the Red Devils, perhaps even vying with Peter Schmeichel as their greatest ‘keeper of the Premier League era.
De Gea may have lost some form in the past couple of years but he has been largely excellent this season, making important saves at key times and cutting out the mistakes, ranking second in the league for clean sheets behind Newcastle’s Nick Pope.
The 32-year-old is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season, however, and an extension is yet to be agreed.
The Latest: Contract talks ‘ongoing’
Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed that United are still looking to agree a new deal for De Gea:
“Man Utd will decide on the goalkeepers situation, so whether they want to sign new one or not; while new deal talks with David de Gea are still ongoing.”
The Verdict: Tough decision for United
On the face of it, giving De Gea a new contract makes complete sense, given his form this season and the vast experience he now possesses at the highest level.
The only drawback is whether or not Erik ten Hag feels he is the perfect fit for him between the sticks, in terms of his ball-playing ability in tight areas.
In truth, if the Spaniard extends his stay at United it is no bad thing – Schmeichel himself has called him ‘unbelievable’ – but Ten Hag must ensure that he has his ideal ‘keeper sorted by next season.
