David Beckham has been snubbed yet again from the New Year Honours list, with the England football legend forced to extend his wait for a knighthood.
Beckham has long been expected to be knighted, having starred for Manchester United and Real Madrid, as well as captaining the Three Lions for six years. But he has been frequently overlooked, though he did receive an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2003.
The latest snub comes despite the former winger queuing for more than 13 hours to view Queen Elizabeth II lying in state. Instead of receiving his long-sought honour, though, he will have to wait until at least the King’s Birthday Honours List later next year.
After being caught up in the Ingenious tax avoidance scheme in 2013, Beckham was cleared of wrongdoing and added back to the official recommendations list last year. His chances of receiving an honour took another blow in 2017 following the leaking of a damning set of emails.
In those emails, Beckham vented his fury with the honours committee for omitting him. He called them “unappreciative c***s” and insisted that he didn’t “care about being knighted”.
Beckham was also alleged to have written: “I expected nothing less. It’s a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of [sic] got something like this 10 years ago.”
HAVE YOUR SAY! Should David Beckham have been knighted in the New Year Honours list?
