Man Utd’s ‘new No11’ responds to suddenly being in the club’s ‘official squad’

Manchester United’s mystery new No11 Betinho has spoken out about accidentally being named a Red Devils player.

The Portuguese forward was bizarrely included in the official United squad list on the Premier League website earlier this week. Erik ten Hag is in search of a new striker to bring in this January – so fans of the Old Trafford club were left baffled when they discovered a random player was listed as their new No11.

Despite fans discovering the player in question was in fact Betinho, the Premier League have since confirmed it was a technical issue which saw his name appear on their website.

But the 29-year-old himself has enjoyed the buzz that emerged following the mistake – claiming he felt more popular than ever before.

Speaking to Portuguese outlet JN, Betinho said: “I only knew it was true when my mates sent me messages and then I confirmed that it was indeed my name on the Premier League website. I got more calls today than on my birthday.”

Betinho, who currently plays for Portuguese club Espinho, has in fact had a brief spell in English football previously. He made one appearance for Brentford during the 2014/15 season – but was some way off ever signing for English football’s most successful side.

Yet that has not stopped the forward from having some fun with the hilarious gaffe. He took to Instagram to tag United duo and Portuguese compatriots Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot in his story.

He jokingly wrote: “Thank you, Manchester United, see you soon. It’ll be a pleasure to share the dressing room with you.”

Being the good sport that he is, Betinho even shared an image of himself in a United kit – though fans are likely to expect a different calibre of player come January.
