Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Manchester United are in ‘contact’ to possibly bring Memphis Depay back to Old Trafford.
The Lowdown: United flop
It is safe to say that Depay was a flop at United, after a big-money move from PSV in the Eredivisie. He managed just seven goals in two years in Manchester but has since gone on to have a great career, amassing over 200 games for Lyon and Barcelona and scoring 90 goals for both combined (Transfermarkt).
Depay is also at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar with the Netherlands and has managed one assist in two substitute appearances so far.
The Latest: In ‘contact’
Taking to Twitter, Plettenberg has revealed that the Red Devils are in ‘contact’ over the possibility of bringing Depay back to the club, and Barcelona would even consider terminating his contract to make a move happen:
“News #Depay: He is also on the list of #MUFC. We‘ve been told that Ten Hag can really imagine bringing him back. There is contact between all parties. Barca would even terminate the contract, desperately wants to save the salary.”
The Verdict: Ronaldo replacement?
With Cristiano Ronaldo now a free agent after leaving United, Erik ten Hag needs to bring in a replacement to help push his team into the UEFA Champions League places come the end of the season.
If supporters can forgive and forget with Depay after his first spell, the striker could be his ideal successor.
Lauded as a ‘different beast‘ now by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, he has scored an impressive 189 senior goals in total for both club and country combined, and it is easy to forget that he is still only 28 years of age.
Depay seems to have matured a lot from his earlier years, and you could say that United would now be signing a player in his prime.
