Amove to Man Utd “makes sense” for a £100m-rated Tottenham forward who wanted out in the past, though one observer cited two reasons why a deal is difficult.
After a bright start to the season, Spurs have ground to a halt in recent weeks. Tottenham have lost their last two in the league and were thoroughly outclassed in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.
Harry Kane thought he’d snatched a late winner, though after a near-four minute delay, VAR controversially ruled out the goal.
Sky Sports explained why the right decision was made, with Kane denied another fairy-tale moment in his Tottenham career.
Kane remains Spurs’ most important and influential player, though his time in north London almost came to an end in 2021.
Man City lodged multiple bids north of £100m for the England captain. Kane was understood to be on board with the move given joining Man City would almost certainly end his trophy duck.
Ultimately, Spurs and Daniel Levy stood firm, with City going on to sign Erling Haaland one year later.
The City route is now closed, though speaking to talkSPORT, pundit and former Spurs striker, Darren Bent, claimed Kane could still end up in Manchester.
Kane would almost certainly force Ronaldo out
Kane’s current contract expires in 2024, meaning a decision on his future is likely to be made next year if he makes it known he won’t extend his stay.
Bent labelled Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd as the “perfect” place to go given they’re soon to be in need of a new centre-forward.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford has devolved into something of a nightmare. The Portuguese is a poor fit for his manager’s system and at 37, is a declining force anyway.
Ronaldo’s current deal expires next summer, though United do hold an option for a further 12 months. Whether they’ll trigger it is another matter entirely.
“Where does Kane go? That City bubbles gone,” said Bent.
When asked about moving to the red half of Manchester, Bent replied: “United would be perfect, they need a centre-forward. So that makes sense.”
However, Bent went on to cite two reasons why prising Kane away from Tottenham won’t be easy.
Kane’s love of Tottenham could scupper Man Utd?
“I’m not convinced he’ll leave,” he added.
“One, Harry loves the football club. Two, someone’s got to stump up the money.
“It was pretty clear last season that he wanted to leave [in 2021]
“Man City were the ones pressing the issue, clearly they never came up with enough money and its believed they bid £140m but didn’t get him.
“They clearly believed that he was worth it, but Spurs thought he was worth more. Spurs are a club where if you don’t hit the price they want, you’re not going anywhere.”
If a Kane exit next summer does ramp up, one might expect the transfer fee in question to be reduced.
Indeed, Kane will be 30 next summer and his contract status (one year left) would leave Tottenham in a vulnerable position.
However, Bent stressed a nine-figure sum would still be required given the nature of the person Man Utd would be dealing with.
“I still think around £100m,”added the pundit.
“There’s no way Daniel Levy will let him walk out for £60m. He could have two weeks left on his contract, Daniel Levy will still want £100m.”
He concluded: “I don’t think it’s a guarantee he goes.”
Kane has also drawn links with German giant Bayern Munich.
The Bavarians would stand arguably the greatest chance of satisfying Kane’s trophy desires of any club in Europe. Indeed, Bayern have won the last 10 Bundesliga titles and did not sign a direct replacement for Robert Lewandowski last summer.
