The Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa has urged residents of Buhweju district to take advantage of the current season to plant tea seedlings as Government processes payments for them.
He said he interacted with the Minister for Finance who said he will write a letter to approve payments to owners of tea seedlings in nursery beds, which letter will be tabled before Parliament.
“The Finance Minister told me that since we have gone far in this financial year, the owners of the nursery beds will be paid in the coming financial year. Let us plant these seedling before the season is over,” Tayebwa said.
“The Finance Minister has also asked me to urge you to be transparent in this planting process and provide proper accountability for the seedlings you will plant,” Tayebwa added.
He said this at a fundraising event for the construction of a residential home for the Archdeacon in Nyakashaka, Buhweju district.
At the event presided over by the Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, Rt Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni, Tayebwa made a cash contribution of Shs15 million towards the construction project.
Tayebwa also committed to follow up on the rehabilitation of road networks in Buhweju.
He noted that the works would have already commenced but the contractor hired to do the work presented unrealistic terms of work.
“I have agreed with the Executive Director of Uganda National Roads authority to come here within two weeks and study the state of the roads and how to start works on them,” he said.
Buhweju District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Oliver Koyekyenga said works to connect piped water across Buhweju were ready to commence but cited a challenge of land availability.
Bishop Twinomujuni thanked the Deputy Speaker for being impartial in his leadership and for generously supporting projects of the church.
At the event were Members of Parliament including, Hon. Ephraim Biraaro (NRM, Buhweju West County) and Buhweju County MP Hon. Francis Mwijukye, Bushenyi Woman MP Hon. Annet Katushabe, Bukanga North County Hon. Nathan Byanyima, Rwampara East County MP Hon. Julius Tusiime as well as EALA MPs Hon. Mary Mugyenyi and Hon. Dennis Namara.
