The 27-year-old has been excellent for City this term after a slow start to the campaign, scoring 16 goals and providing seven assists in 31 starts across all competitions.

Sterling is out of contract at the end of 2022/23 with no sign of an extension being tabled yet.

The Premier League champions could opt to cash in on the forward – who they signed for around £57m from Liverpool in 2015.

According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are ‘ready to expore’ a deal to bring Sterling – who has scored eight times against the Gunners in his career –  to the Emirates.

A move for the player hinges on if Arsenal can secure Champions League football for next season with a win at Tottenham on Thursday sealing a top-four finish.

Mikel Arteta is keen on adding more firepower to his attack this summer, especially with Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette both out of contract at the end of 21/22.

The Gunners have been linked with Sterling’s teammate Gabriel Jesus, who is also out of contract at the end of next season.

The arrival of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund will likely leave Jesus out in the cold despite the Brazilian’s excellent form in recent weeks.

Reports suggest that the 25-year-old is ‘open’ to joining Arsenal. However, ex-Gunners midfielder Paul Merson insists there is “no way” he should swap Manchester for north London.

“Gabriel Jesus should stay at Manchester City. There’s speculation about his future and people think he’s unhappy he doesn’t play enough – but he’s started 17 Premier League games this season,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“I think that’s a lot. He’s played 36 times for City this season. And started a lot of big, big games. Where is he going to go where he can do any better than that?

“Even if City sign Erling Haaland, he shouldn’t leave. No way. This is a team that is going to go deep in four competitions every year and he will always get games.”
