Gabby Agbonlahor believes Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would have been sacked this season if it wasn’t for the club’s off-the-pitch turbulence.

It has been an abnormal campaign at Stamford Bridge due to the situation surrounding the club’s ownership.

The sanctions placed on Roman Abramovich have caused a major disruption to how the club is operating and appears to have had an effect on the playing squad with their Premier League form faltering.

Saturday brought another disappointing result after the Blues surrendered a two-goal lead at home to Wolves, drawing 2-2 in the end thanks to a 97th-minute Conor Coady goal.

Despite an FA Cup final on the horizon and a top-four finish all but secured, former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor insists a normal season behind the scenes would have lost Tuchel his job.

Abramovich was renowned for his brutal philosophy as he went through managers for fun during his time as Chelsea’s owner.

Tuchel guided the Blues to European glory in his first season at the club, however, Agbonlahor believes the German has been let off the hook with his side failing to mount a proper title challenge and exiting the Champions League at the quarter-final stage this campaign.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “I think that Chelsea have underachieved this season.

“In any other season under Abramovich, Thomas Tuchel would have been sacked for this season’s performance.

“When you look at the quality players that they’ve got and the squad of players that they’ve got; (Hakim) Ziyech, (Kai) Havertz, (Romelu) Lukaku, (Christian) Pulisic; they’ve got so many top, top players and if Arsenal win against Leeds then they’re just one point above Arsenal.

“Look at the squads of both Arsenal and Chelsea.

“Tuchel has been disappointing this season and he’s lucky to still be in the job, for me.”
