In her presentation during the Martin Luther Nsibirwa Annual Memorial Lecture inauguration at Makerere University, Rhoda Kalema Nsibirwa, daughter of fallen Buganda kingdom Katikkiro says the father was assassinated due to his interventions towards securing land to Makerere University.
Nsibirwa met his death at Namirembe Cathedral on September 15, 1945, by shooting from suspected kingdom loyalists after he supported the Namasole’s (Kabaka Mutesa II’s mother) sought to remarry, contrary to Buganda norms and land issues.
This came about when the colonial government sought to expand Makerere College establishing University of East Africa in 1945 and this was protested by some Baganda on allocation of more land on Makerere hill.

“There was great search for central land all over the region for a standard university but was nowhere except at Makerere hill”, she added.
Being private mailo, Nsibirwa tried appealed to landlords to offer land to central government but was negative.
Using his powers as Katikkiro by then, convinced the Lukiiko to pass a resolution to have colonial government acquire land for Makerere University as he saw it as precious opportunity if we had institution.
He always urged people to have the university at heart because it was to benefit them.
