Keegan Dolly scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute to give interim coach Arthur Zwane some moment of respite.
 Zwane had made changes to the squad that was smarting from the 2-1 loss to Cape Town City last week.
Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma started ahead of Brandon Petersen, defender Daniel Cardoso replaced Ramahlwe Mphahlehle whereas midfielder Cole Aleander made way for Phathutsehedzo Nange as Sabelo Radebe got the nod ahead of Leonardo Castro in attack.
Chiefs, who parted ways with coach Stuart Baxter after some indifferent results weeks ago, are on fourth place with 42 points from 27 games whereas Gallants take up 11th slot with 31 points.
The Soweto giants are 19 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who settled for a 2-0 win over 10th placed Sekhukhune United.
Aubrey Modiba and leading scorer Peter Shalulile scored for the champions designate Sundowns.
