The picture of the Prince of Wales and her Majesty in a garden was posted alongside a picture of Camilla with her late mother, Rosalind Shand, who died in 1994 aged 72.

The post read: “On Mothering Sunday, we celebrate all the Mothers in our lives and are thinking of those who cannot be with their Mothers today.”

It comes amid reports that Prince Charles is on stand-by to fill in for the Queen at the State Opening of Parliament in the event she is unable to attend.

The Prince of Wales and other members of the Royal Family have been taking on an increasing amount of duties from the 95-year-old monarch.

The state opening of Parliament is set to take place on Tuesday, May 10, with the speech setting out the Government’s agenda for the next session.

Last month, the Queen expressed her “sincere wish” that the Duchess of Cornwall becomes Queen Consort when Prince Charles ascends to the throne.

The Platinum Jubilee message said: “I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me.

“And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me. It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”

Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate have recently finished a tour of the Caribbean to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Duke of Cambridge acknowledged that the Monarchy’s days in Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas may be numbered, saying the future is for “for the people to decide upon”.
