AFRICA SOCCER AL-MERRIKH SACKED HEAD COACH LEE CLARK AFTER CCL LOSS TO AL AHLY

English head coach Lee Clark took charge of Sudanese side Al-Merrikh at the start of the season. And he guided them to the CAF Champions League group stage.

Two games before the end of group stage, the club had revealed that Clark escaped from Sudan, despite their chances of reaching the knockout stages still alive. In their statement, the club announced that he would be replaced by club legend Ibrahim Hussein, who was appointed as an interim head coach.

However, to everyone’s surprise, the Newcastle United legend was seen leading Al-Merrikh from the bench during their 3-1 loss to Al Ahly, which virtually put their hopes of qualifying to the next round to bed.

Following the game, the Sudanese giants announced that Clark will officially leave the club, along with fitness coach Eslam Gamal.

The decision came after an urgent board meeting was held following the game, during which they analysed a report made by the sports department.

The first team’s football director Ibrahim Hussein will be appointed as an interim coach for their league games and the Mamelodi Sundowns clash.

Al-Merrikh now sit at the bottom of Group A with four points, three behind second-placed Al Ahly and six behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

They will need to win their next game against historic rivals Al-Hilal, and for Al Ahly to lose against Masandawana in order to reach the quarterfinals
