Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has lauded the Flames of Malawi for their better performance despite losing 1-0 to Guinea at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cameroon on Monday evening.
Gyan spoke in his post-match analysis on SuperSport Television after the Group B match played at Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium where the Sly Nationale won the game through defender Issiaga Sylla’s 36th minute strike.
“Malawi were a better team when you talk about possession…the Malawians had character… they were the team that had three clear chances but experience played a key role [in Guinea’s win],” he said.
During the game, Malawi had the most clear-cut chances to scored but captain Limbikani Mzava, striker Khuda Muyaba, midfielders Micium Mhone, Fransisco Madinga and Yamikani Chester all failed to locate the back of the net.
Malawi next face Zimbabwe on Friday then Senegal four days later.
Guinea have since joined Senegal at the summit of the group after the latter also saw off Zimbabwe by a similar margin in an early Monday kick off when Liverpool star Sadio Mane scored via a late penalty.
