Malawians are mourning the death of former First Lady Anne Muluzi who succumbed to cancer at a Kenyan hospital on Tuesday.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Office of the President and Cabinet said Muluzi, aged 69, died at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.
“She died on Tuesday 28th December 2021 at Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, after a long battle with cancer,” Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Zangazanga Chikhosi, said in the statement.
President Lazarus Chakwera said he was “deeply shocked” to learn of the former first lady’s death.
“Malawians will always remember Madame Chidzira Muluzi as a humble, caring and selfless person who served this nation with diligence,” he said.
Anne Muluzi became Malawi’s inaugural first lady after her husband Bakili Muluzi won the country’s first multi-party post-independence elections in 1994. Prior to that there was no first lady as the country’s first post-independence president Hastings Kamuzu Banda was officially unmarried.
Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima described the late first lady as a “patriot” who dedicated most of her time to charity work.
“We shall always remember the late Annie Chidzira Muluzi for her generosity and charity work that made her reach out to thousands of needy and vulnerable children through her Freedom Foundation Trust,” Chilima said.
Opposition Democratic Progressive Party leader Dalitso Kabambe thanked Annie Muluzi for her contribution to the country.
“Words may not suffice to express the heartfelt sorrow that we feel following her passing since Madame Muluzi was not only a mother to many but a great person to the nation who dedicate most part of her life to serving others.”
Office of the President and Cabinet has announced the death of former first lady of Malawi Annie Muluzi.
According to the secretary to the President and Cabinet, Zangazanga Chikhosi, Madame Muluzi died on Tuesday in Kenya after a long time battle with cancer.
“Details of the funeral arrangements and repatriation of the body will be announced later,” said Chikhosi in a statement.
Annie Chidzira Muluzi was the first wife to former President Bakili Muluzi and a mother to Atupele Muluzi, the current President for United Democratic Front (UDF).
