Who knew a draw could contain so much excitement.
Holding its Champions League Round of 16 draw on Monday, UEFA voided the initial matchups due to technical difficulties.
Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid were slated to play one another based on the first draw. Instead, Atletico Madrid will face Manchester United, while PSG will play Real Madrid.
From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.
“Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16,” UEFA said in a statement.
The other Round of 16 matchups are:
Salzburg vs. Bayern Munich
Benfica vs. Ajax
Sporting CP vs. Manchester City
Chelsea vs. Lille
Inter Milan vs. Liverpool
Juventus vs. Villareal
Real Madrid had initially been paired with Benfica, and will now face a much tougher task in PSG.
According to The Athletic, the original draw became problematic when United were erroneously drawn against Villarreal, a squad they had played in Group F play. (Possible opponents names are written on ping-pong balls and randomly selected.)
The tie was redrawn, with Manchester City picked against Villarreal. For unknow reasons, The Athletic said, Manchester United wasn’t placed in the pool of potential opponents for Atletico Madrid, who instead got Bayern Munich.
