Online meetings with national stakeholders to present the team and objectives of the technical mission appointed by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body to the UNESCO 2001 Convention and to address the needs for coordinated and specific measures for the protection of the country’s underwater cultural heritage.
On 4 June 2020, the Bureau of the Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001) approved Paraguay’s request to receive support in safeguarding three wrecks belonging to the War against the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), which were exposed to looting and alteration of their conservation conditions due to the lowering of the river. Within this framework, a mission from the Scientific and Technical Advisory Board (STAB) was appointed to provide technical assistance and work together with the National Secretariat of Culture of Paraguay and UNESCO Montevideo in the protection of this cultural heritage. As part of the agenda of activities, dissemination and capacity-building activities have been planned to raise awareness of the issue and promote the development of action protocols for the conservation and protection of the country’s underwater cultural heritage. On 20 and 21 October, two online meetings will be held with national authorities, on the one hand, and specialized technical bodies of the various institutions involved, on the other, to inform about the objectives of the technical mission and address the needs for coordinated action specific to this type of heritage.
