Nairobi, Kenya — President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent his condolences to Burundians upon hearing the sudden death of the outgoing President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza.
In his letter, President Kenyatta said that he has learnt with great sorrow of the passing away of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi.
“On behalf of the Government and the People of the Republic of Kenya and on my own behalf, I convey our deepest condolences to the family and friends of President Nkurunziza, and to the Government and the People of the Republic of Burundi.”, Kenyatta said.
The Commander-In-Chief of the Kenyan Armed Forces later added;
We share the pain of this loss. We mourn – with our Burundi brothers and sisters – the passing of an astute regional counterpart who served his nation passionately as Head of State and Government, and worked tirelessly for the peace and stability of his country and the Great Lakes Region. Our collective prayers are with the People of Burundi at this moment of immense national grief.
The death of President Nkurunziza is a big blow. It has robbed East Africa of a leader whose contribution to the integration and progress of the region shall be sorely missed.
President Nkurunziza was an exceptional leader in many ways. He was a man of great courage: never afraid to fight for what he believed was right and was always ready to make peace when the time was right. His perseverance and determination saw him pursue his vision for a peaceful and stable Burundi.
In his life, President Nkurunziza made valuable contributions to the welfare of the People of Burundi and our East African region. Therefore, as we pay homage to him, let us also celebrate and honor his life and achievements.
We pray that the Almighty God will grant his family and the People of Burundi the strength and grace to bear the loss.
