Ministry of Health has handed over 700,000 “Long Lasting Insecticide-treated” mosquito nets to Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) as part of the efforts to control Malaria among the UPDF community.

The nets will be distributed during the 39th Tarehe Sita celebrations on February 6, 2020.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine who presided over the handover of nets appreciated the support from UPDF towards improving service delivery in the health sector.

“I want to appreciate the work you are doing, especially during emergencies. During the Measles and Rubella campaign, you helped us airlift our vaccines. May God bless UPDF,” she said.

The Ministry of Health is yet to roll out the third Universal Coverage Campaign for the distribution of Mosquito nets which will see the distribution of 27 million nets starting in April 2020.

According to the ministry, the campaign is intended to increase net ownership and additionally create a net culture.

This year’s Tarehe Sita anniversary main activities will take place in Great Luweero Area under the theme “Consolidating the UPDF strategic partnership with the people to guard gains of liberation.”

Brig Gen Richard Karemire, the Defence Spokesperson said that the 2020 celebrations will cover districts of Luweero, Nakaseke, Nakasongola and Wakiso (Busiro North).

“This area has been chosen because of the special historical role the people played during the 1981-1986 protracted peoples’ struggle to Liberate Uganda,” said Karemire in a statement.
