KAMPALA — Three top Uganda Revenue Authority(URA) Commissioners have thrown in a towel and resigned from their jobs.
Reports indicate that URA’s Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Dicksons Kateshumbwa, Henry Saka, Commissioner Tax Investigations and Silaj Kanyesigye Assistant Commissioner large taxpayers officer were forced to resign a few days ago.
“Today after more than 14 years of service in the authority, I have decided to end my tour of duty ahead of the contractual period with immediate effect,” said Kateshumbwa in his farewell message to URA staff.
Their resignation come at the time when CG John Musinguzi has just assumed office. Reports established show that the problem was messing up the former winning team at the tax board was the manner in which Musinguzi came after dropping of former CG Doris Akol.
It is stated that an American lady who is believed to be at the centre of the confusion was introduced to the president as an expert on rental tax. However, this lady is said to have met the president through Attorney General before her contract could be issued, sources say she had already misled the president on how she would use Google maps to locate buildings that were reportedly evading rental tax.
“I have been privileged to serve in Customs, Tax Investigations and Domestic Taxes in addition to holding the WCO Chairmanship, Chairman Board of Trustees URA Staff Retirements Benefits Scheme, among others. I am particularly proud of the great countless reforms implemented that transferred Customs. This experience will be greatly put to use in my next occupation,” Kateshumbwa said.
Before being appointed Commissioner for Domestic Taxes, Kateshumbwa served as URA’s Commissioner of Customs until February 2020, when he was replaced by Abel Kagumire in a major reshuffle.
Sources within URA say majority of the Commissioners and other senior managers have never come to terms with sacking of Akol and more so being replaced by a person who hasn’t been in the management of the tax body.
