KAMPALA — The police has on Tuesday night released Mr. Samson Kasumba, the NBS Television news anchor arrested in Kampala on Monday.
According to Police, Kasumba was not arrested for anything related to his work and details on the charges to be preferred will be communicated in due course.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says that Kasumba was arrested for engaging in subversive activities, charges which he says are not related to his work as a journalist. He, however, declined to divulge details on the particulars of the offence.
He is a subject of investigation and it is not connected in any way to journalistic work but he is being investigated together with others for alleged subversive activities,” Enanga said.
Enanga said that detectives from the electoral and political offences department have interrogated him this morning and we are going together with him to conduct search in various places of interest.
He was picked up from the Kamwokya based Media Plaza, the home of Next Media on Monday night after airing the 9 pm news bulletin. His workmate Sheila Nduhukire said that Kasumba was subsequently taken at Kiira Road police station where he spent a night.
Police earlier today conducted a search at Kasumba’s home in Naalya, a Kampala suburb.
“Am out and getting home. Tomorrow I will be getting to work,” said Kasumba upon his release at Kira Road Police at around 9:30PM on Tuesday evening.
His lawyer Nicholas Opiyo said Mr. Kasumba has been ordered to appear at Kira Police Station on Monday April 27, 2020.
