The FDC party spokesperson, Ibrahim Semujju said the party is not hurt because of her departure, since she has joined another democratic seeking force.

The party has nominated another candidate to replace the former Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza as Kasese Woman MP in the forthcoming elections.

This follows Kiiza’s announcement that she had opted to quit elective politics and will not be running for any position come 2021.

Kiiza also joined the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party, founded by her former boss at FDC, Maj Gen. Gregory Mugisha Muntu.

FDC says they will continue working with her and other forces of change to liberate the country.

The FDC party spokesperson, Ibrahim Semujju said the party is not hurt because of her departure, since she has joined another democratic seeking force.

“I would have been personally hurt if Kiiza crossed to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) like Kibazanga did. But if she has joined another democratic seeking force, we will certainly be working together,” he noted.

“Winnie was leader of opposition when I was nearly her deputy. In Parliament we worked with everybody including some elements of NRM,” he added.

Semujju said Winnie will be missed in FDC as the founder, but also “wish her well, where she has gone”.

On how this is likely to affect the party, Semujju said: “Before Winnie came, you didn’t know her. Now someone has been nominated in Kasese and I can assure you she is going to win. At the conclusion of the next general election, there will be another Kasese woman MP from FDC. That, I can assure you”.

Presidential flag-bearer

Semujju said the process to identify the party presidential flag-bearer is still on to see who picks the forms on August 18th and 19th.

“Until the process is done; I cannot tell who will be our presidential flag bearer,” he said.

He stressed that many party members might still want Dr. Col. Kizza Besigye to be the party’s flag bearer but that is his decision to make.

“As of now, he is our party mobiliser in Rukungiri. That is where we deployed him. Everybody in FDC would want Besigye to be our flag bearer but that decision is personal. That is why we announced that if there is any party member interested to run for party the presidential flag-bearer, they should pick forms. Besigye will pick if he is interested,” he added.
