Three Karamojong cattle rustlers were on Tuesday shot dead in a fire exchange with UPDF soldiers in Kotido District.
The UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson, Major Peter Mugisa, said the fire exchange came after they encountered the warriors with a herd of over 70 cattle, which they had stolen.
He said the army recovered the cattle and two guns.
Over the last one month, cattle rustling has intensified in Karamoja, with warriors clashing with Local Defence Unit personnel backed up by the UPDF. This has created fear among the general public of insecurity returning back to Karamoja yet again.
On May 21, Karamojong warriors attacked the police station of Kangole town council in Napak district, the rustlers engaged Police for about 30 minutes before police overpowering them.
On May 15, two Karamojong cattle rustlers were killed in a clash with UPDF soldiers in Nadunget sub-county, six kilometers away from Moroto town.
On May 9, 2020, Karamojong warriors laid an ambush and killed a medical officer attached to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital.
On May 4, 2020, Karamojong cattle rustlers killed one of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers and drove away an unspecified number of cattle in Kaabong district.
Major Mugisa said the army will never allow the Karimojong to take back Karamoja to where it was got from.
“The peace that Karamoja is currently enjoying was got out of sacrifices and we shall not allow it to go back again,” he said.
