UGANDA: URA boss adjusts 200 employees.

A month after four of its senior officials resigned, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has shuffled 211 staff under its customs department.The customs department is responsible for collecting duties and taxes imposed on imported and less commonly exported goods. It also controls the flow of people, animals, goods and hazardous items in and out of the country. According to a memo from Mr Abel Kagumire, the commissioner for customs, 211 employees will have different positions within the department effective today. “Manager customs planning is tasked to facilitate this smooth deployment process before July 1, 2020,” the memo reads in part. Tax body, Uganda Revenue Authority has started the implementation of the Digital Tax Stamps on a high. The body reports that 32 manufacturers and importers who are domestic and exporters have already registered their factory lines in compliance with the Digital tax stamps. According to the tax body, large scale manufacturers including Crown Beverages, the manufacturers of Pepsi and other beverages, Mukwano industries and Riham Industries are some of those that have heeded to the call for the implementation of the Digital Stamp System. “We are continuing with the registration of manufacturers for digital tax stamps. Since they came into effect on November 1, 2019 , digital stamps have met stiff resistance from manufacturers but they were given a grace period up to January 31 which elapsed on Friday. However, in a reminder, the tax body has warned of heavy fines to manufacturers who fail to implement the digital stamp system after elapse of the grace period. “Notice is hereby given to all manufacturers or importers of products that were gazetted for Digital Tax Stamps including – soda, beer, spirits, wine, mineral water and tobacco products (including cigarettes) that the deadline for the transitional period is 31st January 2020. UGANDA: Man defrauds millions from Ugandans claiming to be a URA clearing agent.

In December 2018, Batte Kasim Abdul, who claimed to be a clearing agent with Intra Cargo, informed a client (complainant) that Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) was going to auction some vehicles. The suspect told the complainant about the availability of two vehicles, a Toyota Harrier and a Sahara Pick-up, both in good condition. Batte, dressed up in a white shirt emblazoned with a Uganda Revenue Authority logo and customs pips (an imitation of the URA customs officers’ uniform), informed the client that he works in the Commissioner Customs Office.
