Pep Guardiola says he wants Lionel Messi to finish his career at Barcelona rather than join him at Manchester City.Messi has a release clause in his contract this summer and reports in Spain and England have suggested he could trigger it after a rift with Barcelona's sporting director Eric Abidal, who has accused the players of getting former manager Ernesto Valverde the sack.Guardiola was Barcelona manager from 2008 to 2012 and works alongside former Barca directors Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain at City, so it is little surprise the Premier League champions have been tipped as favourites to sign Messi if he decides to leave the Camp Nou. Organsing the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, as FIFA proposed “can be a good thing,” according to former Ivorian international and Chelsea forward Didier Drogba. The Elephants skipper believes it could increase the flavour and rarity of the trophy. Drogba also thinks that this schedule will protect African footballers who play in Europe. “I think we’re going to have to get to that point [playing in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations every four years] because the African player is quite disadvantaged in relation to his club, and given that there are a lot of African players now playing in Europe, it complicates things a bit. Already at the time when we played in the African Cup of Nations, which was in January, (a player) to leave for the national team was to jeopard...

"The relationship between the coach and the dressing room has always been good but there are things as an ex-player that I could smell. I told the club what I thought and we reached a decision [on Valverde]." Six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi responded o...

SPORTS: AFCON must be played every 4 years for ‘more impact ‘ – FIFA president.

The Africa Cup of Nations tournament should be played every four years instead of two, FIFA President Gianni Infantino urged the continent’s soccer leaders on Saturday. Infantino said revenue could rise up to six-fold for a four-yearly continental championship, and become a must-see event “not only for Africa but the world.” The idea would likely be backed by European clubs who dislike losing their players to national-team duty, and especially in mid-season. The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in January. The FIFA president also tempted African officials with the prospect of more entries in an expanded slate of youth World Cups. Infantino suggested annual under-16 and under-18 tournaments for boys and girls instead of the current under-17 events every two years. T...

Manchester City will get the chance to defend their EFL Cup title in the final against Aston Villa after beating Manchester United 3-2 on aggregate, despite Nemanja Matic – who was also sent off – inflicting a 1-0 defeat in Wednesday's second leg. City produced a wonderful display in the first meeting at Old Trafford and were arguably unlucky to only win 3-1, though it proved to be enough to send Pep Guardiola's men to Wembley even though they failed to meet expectations at home. Despite finding themselves under extreme pressure at times in the first half, United managed to go into the break ahead thanks to Matic's satisfying strike in the 35th minute, casting some uncertainty over City's command of the tie. But United were unable to use that goal as a launchpad, as Ol...
