UGANDA: Agriculture ministry urges for more Shs16b to fight locusts

The Ministry of Agriculture has asked for another Shs16 billion to fight locusts. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Vincent Sempijja, said the money is needed to control the locusts that have now spread to 23 districts. “We have asked for more Shs16 billion. Of this, Shs9b will be for the UPDF response team, Shs5.6b will be used to buy more chemicals and the rest shall be used to support lower local governments,” he told journalists in Kampala on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. “Locust swarms have now been confirmed in the regions of Karamoja, Teso, Acholi, Lango and Sebei,” he added. The state Minister for Animal Industry Mr. Bright Rwamirama has noted that the locusts have been laying eggs and should the latest eggs hatch, Uganda may be faced with an outbreak. The minister made the remarks on February 18, while he was addressing the press at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala. UGANDA: Chemical spraying to begin as locusts spread across Karamoja

Desert locusts had by Monday evening spread to Six districts in Karamoja as government raced against time to deliver the chemicals used to spray the deadly insects. An update from the Office of the Prime Minister indicated that the insects that entered the country through Amudat District in Karamoja Sub-region on Sunday afternoon, have now spread to Moroto, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit, Napak, and Abim districts in Karamoja. ” Swarm of locusts was reportedly seen at Alerek Hill in Labwor County of Abim District,” an update shared by Mr Martin Owor, the commissioner disaster preparedness and management at the Office of the Prime Minister, read. UGANDA: Panic in Karamoja as locusts advance border

The pastoral community in Karamoja is in panic following reports that the deadly locusts that have attacked parts of Africa are only 60 kilometres away from Uganda. The locusts are said to be advancing to Uganda through West Pokot County in Kenya to Amudat and via Turkana to Kaabong. On Saturday, Feb 1, Kaabong and Amudat local governments formed committees to monitor the border. The teams were directed to closely monitor the borders and report to the districts and the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries if they see anything similar to the ravenous insects.
