Echesa’s lawyers dismissed the prosecution’s claims that the said documents were recovered from his vehicle when detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested him. Further, the lawyer said the offence for which the former cabinet member was being questioned is minor and as such did not warrant his detention as authorities investigate the matter. “From the affidavit of the Investigating Officer, it is clear the offence the applicants are investigating. A minor offence of making a document cannot call for the detention of the first respondent (Echesa),” the court heard. “It won’t help the investigation that he must be in custody for the investigation of such a minor offence to be concluded,” Echesa’s counsel added. ...

KENYA: The untold story of Moi’s troubled family.

AFRICA, KENYA
In the Daniel arap Moi family, the fortunes of Jonathan Toroitich followed those of his mother Lena: Forgotten, cowed and, by middle-class standards, living in penury. Despite having a billionaire father, Jonathan never lived a profligate lifestyle — and it was no wonder that his brother, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, mourned him as a “down-to-earth” person. LET DOWN Family sources say that as the eldest son, Jonathan was always uncomfortable that his father appeared to favour the youngest son, Gideon, who today doubles as the spokesman on all matters pertaining to the family, and Moi’s health, against Kalenjin traditions. While most sons and daughters of African dictators live in luxury, the same cannot be said of most of Moi’s children who don’t seem to display any ...

EAST AFRICA: Worsening locust invasion threatens food security across the region.

EAST AFRICA
The worst locust outbreak that parts of East Africa have seen in 70 years needs some $76 million to help control and the money is “required by, actually, now,” the United Nations said Thursday. So far just $15 million has been mobilized to help stop the outbreak that threatens to worsen an already poor hunger situation for millions of people in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and elsewhere, Dominique Bourgeon, emergencies director with the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, told a briefing in Rome. “You can imagine that a country that has not seen such a thing in 70 years is not well prepared,” he said of Kenya, East Africa’s economic hub. If after April the money has come, it’s somehow useless. So the timing, location, is crucial. The outbreak, blamed in part on a chang...

KENYA: Governor Waititu Trembles like a Leaf.

AFRICA, KENYA
Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu broke two cardinal rules of Kenyan politics, but for some reason, he did it with reckless abandon, managing to simultaneously dismiss the political wishes of the occupant of the house on the hill, looting the coffers of the most populous county dry while maintaining his innocence in poorly constructed English and donning painfully oversize shirts. Recently, Kenyans have come up with a phrase for describing the trajectory which the country’s political landscape is taking, Nobody Can Stop Reggae and on Wednesday evening, Lucky Dube’s spirit hovered over the Senate as legislators from the Kieleweke faction conspired to kick out Waititu despite last-ditch efforts by the beleaguered governor to summon his inner Orengo in an attempt to warn the legis...
