KAMPALA, UGANDA — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has mourned the death of Ugandan hero and former footballer Jimmy Kirunda who passed on at the age of 70.
“I have learnt about the death of Kirunda, one of the greatest footballers our country has produced. We remember the major feat when he captained the national team to the African Cup of nations finals in 1978. We shall miss him.” the president posted on Twitter.
The former captain to the Ugandan football team led Uganda to the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations final against Ghana where Uganda finished second.
The legendary Ugandan started his football story in the early 1960s at Mulago FC, one of Uganda’s most prestigious football clubs .It was during his time there that he honed his football skills. His successful Club career saw him play for Express FC (1968 to 1969), KCC FC (1969 to 1979) and Abu Dhabi Sports Football club (1979 and 1980. He also had a successful period at SC Villa FC.
