Yesterday, the Kampala Mayor aspirant, Joseph Mayanja popularly kown as Dr. Chameleone had organised to open his political offices around Balintuma Road in Old Kampala however their meeting was called off by police with tear gas.
The police said that Mr. Mayanja had erected nine tents and mobilized people to attend in large numbers.
Police also noted that Chameleone had also planned and hired a brass band to lead their procession from Namirembe upto the venue.
“We talked to the organizers to put in place all the necessary SOPs of the Ministry of Health,They refused to comply,” said SP Patrick Onyango.
Mr. Onyango said that Chameleone went ahead to organise the function without considering social distancing, majority had no masks although a few were putting on but in the wrong way which Mr. Onyango said was going to be a breeding ground for COVID19.
“We talked to them again and they decided to leave the venue but later on they reorganised and came attacking police.”
“We responded by firing teargas to disperse them.”
According to Mr. Onyango, Police did not use rubble bullets during the operation and that there was no injuries.
Two suspects have been arrested and they are being detained at Old Kampala Police Station on charges of disobedience of lawful orders.
