At least one person has been confirmed dead after a volcano unexpectedly erupted on the Italian Island of Stromboli .
According to local officials, the deceased is believed to be a tourist. He was killed by falling stones during a walk.
The officials also said that the unexpected eruption started fires on the western side of the small Mediterranean island and sent plumes of grey smoke into the air. But no further damage has been reported or casualties.
Stromboli is one of the longest continuously active volcanoes in the world and has been erupting for about 2,000 years.
