The Police in Kisoro district have arrested a Member of Parliament for allegedly holding rallies without following the Ministry of Health directives that curb the spread of COVID-19.
A Police statement said Sam Bitangaro, the MP for Bufumbira South, was arrested on Friday evening following a rally he held at Kabindi Playground in Nyarusizi sub-county.
The Police said the rally “attracted many people and failed to observe social distance”.
“The DPC of Kisoro, Christopher Ruhunde, directed Nyarusiza Police Post to swing in action and disperse the rally. However, due to bad terrain of the area, Police responded and found when the gathering had already been done,” Police said.
“The DPC then detailed more personnel on the ground who prevented further gatherings at Buhangura, Karambi, Mubande, and Bushoka Trading centres, all in Nyarusiza sub-county.”
Efforts to havE Bitangaro arrested were futile as he switched off his known phone numbers and his Political Assistant, Mr. Senzoga’s phone numbers went unanswered,” the Police added.
He was later traced and eventually arrested, and is now being detained at Kisoro CPS pending court.
A few days ago, a circular seen by this website directed all Police commanders to arrest whoever would be found flouting operating procedures meant to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The ruling National Resistance Movement also warned its members to obey the government directives as the party goes into primaries.
