Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spent the whole transfer window hoping to sign Jadon Sancho.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly decided to prioritise Ousmane Dembele over Jadon Sancho on transfer deadline day. The Norwegian saw his side battered 6-1 by Tottenham on Sunday. And his side’s need for reinforcements was obvious on a chastening afternoon at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have endured a torrid start to the new Premier League season, with the shadow of Sancho looming large.
Solskjaer has repeatedly asked Ed Woodward to sign the 20-year-old throughout the summer transfer window but, with a day to go, time is running out.
United’s need for new faces was obvious as they were battered 6-1 by Tottenham on Sunday, with braces from Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane, as well as further strikes from Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier, making it a shocking afternoon at the office.
Now, fans are hoping that Sancho will sign.
But the Independent say that Solskjaer has decided to switch focus to Barcelona’s Dembele instead.
It’s claimed that there is now only a ‘slim possibility’ Sancho will move to Old Trafford because there is too great a difference between the positions of United and Dortmund.
They’re said to be willing to have one last crack at the 20-year-old.
But Dembele looks a more plausible option and he’d be open to moving to Old Trafford, having struggled throughout his time at Barcelona since his move from Borussia Dortmund back in 2017.
United are set to make two signings on transfer deadline day with Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles poised to add some South American steel.
But a wide forward remains the priority with Solskjaer seeking an upgrade on Daniel James and Juan Mata in that area.
Meanwhile, Cardiff City star Sol Bamba believes United would be onto a winner should they sign Dembele – despite his injury problems at Barcelona.
“He’s a similar sort of player to Sancho,” the Bluebirds star said of Dembele on Sky Sports.
He’s direct, likes to take people on and score goals.
“I see why United decided to go for him if they don’t get Sancho, but I think the Sancho situation is going on and on and they might have to go on to another target, because if you’re not going to get the player you have to move on and get the second target.
“I think it would be a good signing for United. I know him a bit, he’s a good lad.
“I do think he needs to stay fit because if he stays fit he is an unbelievable player.
“Unfortunately he has been injured too much at Barcelona, but I think he needs a change of scenery, a change of country maybe and I think United will be the right move for him.”
Former United star Rio Ferdinand has slammed the Red Devils for their lack of transfer business this summer, saying: “The most frustrating thing for Man Utd fans, is that we’ve all been very aware of who the targets were at the beginning of the window.
“That’s the frustrating element.
“You look at it, is Covid playing a part in the financials? There’s purse strings having to be pulled a little bit.
“We saw left-back and right-wing are the areas they are looking for but then all of a sudden the season starts, the players haven’t been brought in.
“All of a sudden a defeat to Palace at home absolutely ignites the negativity that surrounds the place and makes it a situation it never was.
“We rewind two months previous, everyone was saying, ‘Well done, Ole’.
“Got them into Champions League position, the club’s on this upward trajectory now and two months – because there’s not been the signings and a first defeat of the season at home – really changes the picture massively for the club.”
