The central bank of Macedonia held its key interest rate at a record low of 1.5 percent during its January meeting, after it had slashed it by 75bps in 2020 to prop up the economy struggling with the impact of the Covid-19 illness. Policymakers noted cumulative inflation in 2020 was 1.2 percent, in line with the central bank’s latest inflation forecast. The central bank concluded that the economic flows are currently stable and the latest macroeconomic indicators are generally in line with expectations. However, the uncertainty and risks related to the Covid-19 pandemic remain, both globally and domestically.
