Security guards fired live bullets to disperse ‘kanyamas’ mobilised by a businessman in Mbarara City to forcibly regain access to his building that had been taken over by a bank over an unpaid loan.
Saracen guards were deployed by Orient Bank to guard Balya Mall after taking over its possession last week over a sh9b loan owed to them by the mall owner, Apollo Balya Muhumuza.
Reports indicate that the bank and Balya had a meeting on Friday and agreed that the tycoon pays the debt in November.
However, the guards were not withdrawn from the building located on the Mbarara-Masaka road.
Heavily built men then attempted to access the building but were repulsed by the guards, prompting the Police to intervene.
Balya’s men have parked his vehicles in the middle of all major roads, blocking access to the city centre.
