After the National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) endorsing Jacob Oulanya as the ruling party candidate for the speakership of the 11th Parliament, a section of leaders in Busoga have advised the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, to honour the party’s decision.
Oulanya’s endorsement came as a shock to Rebecca Kadaga and to some leadaers in Busoga sub-region.
Some leaders who the New Vision talked to on Sunday, expressed mixed reactions over CEC’s decision as some requested President Museveni to consider Kadaga for a bigger job.
The Jinja district NRM vice chairperson, Majid Dhikusoka, said much as Kadaga was her favourite candidate but CEC’s decision as a party was paramount adding that no individual is more powerful than the party itself.
“I request Kadaga to follow CEC’s position and not to defy the NRM party,” Dhikusoka said during a phone interview.
He further requested NRM’s national chairman President Yoweri Museveni to consider Kadaga for a bigger job in the central government.
Hajji Abubaker Walubi, the Iganga district NRM chairperson, said CEC looked into the two NRM cadres and chose one who is Jacob Oulanya.
Walubi said Uganda being a multi-party county, it was the mandate of NRM’s CEC to look into many things to endorse Oulanya for the speakership.
“Kadaga has served for almost 20 years as deputy speaker and speaker of Parliament. Let us give chance to another person to be speaker,’ he said.
Walubi wished Kadaga well and also requested President Museveni to deploy her accordingly since she is still a strong NRM cadre.
Busoga diocesan Bishop, Paul Samson Naimanhye said: “The Bible is very clear, people can leave you out, friends can deny you and relatives can forsake you but God says I will never forsake you up to the end of the earth.”
Naimanhye comforted Kadaga to remain strong, adding that God will never forsake her.
Following lengthy deliberations on Sunday morning at State House, Entebbe, the majority of CEC members backed the Omolo County Member of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah to become the Speaker of the 11th Parliament over Kadaga.
