The Irish singer formerly known as Sinead O’Connor has converted to Islam. According to several posts to Twitter, the 51-year-old has taken the Muslim name Shuhada’ Davitt. Shuhada is Arabic for “martyrs”.
The star shared several images of herself in hijab, describing her conversion as a “natural conclusion” of religious study.
“This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim,” Davitt wrote. “This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada’.”
