The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Hon Gabriela Cuevas Barron has praised the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga for championing women inclusion and supporting marginalized groups.
President Cuevas said this while meeting the Speaker as she visits Uganda as part of the commemoration of 130 years of the IPU. The meeting was held on Thursday, 23 January 2020 in the Speaker’s chambers at Parliament.
She commended the Speaker for her unwavering efforts in championing women’s recognition in the IPU.
Cuevas also applauded Kadaga for making sure international commitments are realised and translated to local level for the ordinary people.
“Thank you for being an advocate for inclusion of the marginalised groups; we share the same values of wanting democracy, human rights observation and inclusion of women and children to make the planet a better place,” she said,
Kadaga said that Parliament took a decision to hold an annual Parliament Week in order to heed to the resolution of the IPU on bridging the gap between the parliaments and the people during the 126th Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference held in Kampala in 2012.
The Speaker told IPU president that during Parliament Week, there is a fundraising walk which is meant to collect funds for a rehabilitation centre for people with albinism; a stakeholders’ debate involving the civil society; Public Parliament which attracts an open public debate and; guided tours of Parliament.
