NEW DEHLI, India
The South Asian country of India has begun counting millions of votes in its general election with a coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party taking an early lead.
According to the country’s Election Commission, the ruling coalition party the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is so far leading with 101 seats, with the opposition United Progressive Alliance ahead in 40, at 9 a.m. local time. There are 542 seats available.
The Election Commission will by Thursday evening announce the results.
