Ighalo on a verge of a permanent move at United

Manchester United are reportedly ready to seal the permanent transfer of Odion Ighalo after the striker’s impressive start at the club.

The Nigerian striker is ready to give up £6 million in wages in order to stay at Manchester United, according to reports. Ighalo’s current loan deal only runs until May, which as things stand would mean he would leave before the season is completed.

The Nigeria international has impressed since his surprise loan move from Shanghai Shenhua in the January transfer window. He scored four goals in eight appearances since his arrival at Old Trafford and has been praised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.  Ighalo is willing to take a pay cut in order to make that happen. The report claims that the striker is currently earning £240,000 a week with Shanghai Shenhua but is willing to accept half of that to remain at Old Trafford.

The former Watford striker had been playing in the Chinese Super League since 2017 before joining United on loan in the January transfer window.

“He will improve and get better,” said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the United boss.

However, Ighalo refused to comment on his contract situation amid the current Covid-19 crisis, but there is little doubt he would be eager to remain at his boyhood club.

He said shortly after his arrival: “People that know me, even back in Nigeria, and even when I was playing at Watford, my teammates knew that I loved Man Utd, I support them. When I played against Man U, that emotion is there, because it is my dream.”

United have the option of signing Ighalo on a permanent deal but will need to pay £15 million.
