Coronavirus – Uganda: People raid Mayor’s home for food

Kampala: On Sunday, people raised the home of Erias Lukwago, the Mayor of Kampala begging for food relief from the Mayor.

Lukwago said the national taskforce on COVID-19 is yet to deliver relief food to residents in his area (Lubaga South), Kampala. And vulnerable, hungry Kampala dwellers raided Lukwago’s home for rescue.

At the start of April, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, who heads Uganda’s Coronavirus Response Team,launched

the country’s relief food distribution campaign.

The test run that mainly targets vulnerable groups like the elderly and sick that have been affected by a nation-wide lockdown started in Bwaise, according to Dr Rugunda.

He said orphanages, hospitals and barracks would be given priority. Beneficiaries will be given sugar, milk, maize flour and beans.

He said much as areas in Kampala and Wakiso districts have been given priority, other districts are likely to be considered if resources are available.

However the process has been locked by delays brought about by corrupt officials and poor organization.
