Climate journalism, science journalism expert and mentor Patrick Luganda dies

Spread the love

Climate journalism in particular but science journalism in general today has lost a great icon and mentor in Patrick

Patrick Luganda

             The late Patrick Luganda

For those who may not be aware, Patrick’s mother Nnalongo Luganda (right) was buried on Sunday in Iganga and unfortunately Patrick couldnt attend bcoz he was already in ICU.
I have known Patrick for over 30 years as a workmate at New Vision and later as my boss in an 18 month project to train climate journalists under the Network of Climate Scientists of the Greater Horn of Africa (NECJOGHA).
Patrick left New Vision several years before I did to go and concentrate on NECJOGHA and other climate and farming related NGOs he had formed.
                                                                     The late Patrick Luganda
After I also left New Vision and had decided to go to private employment I bumped into Patrick and he convinced me to visit his office at Kiwanga about an upcoming project where he thought I would put in practice my teaching profession and journalism experience.
To cut the story short we were later to work under him to train over 200 journalists in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania under funding from the British government thru their meteorological agency UKMet.
Patrick was the best boss I have ever worker under. Always calm and never putting under pressure even at times when the funders were on our neck over accountability.
I last talked to Patrick on Monday over the loss of his mum who was buried on Sunday.
I however cut short the call before even a minute when I realised the voice on the other end was too weak.
When someone dies they always say he is indispensable but Patrick is indispensable to NECJOGHA and the climate fraternity.

Susan Higenyi:

I was resting with a bad headache – off social media – then I glimpsed thru a watsap group and there the news of the death of my friend Mzee Patrick Luganda hit me.

I was catapulted out of the sleeping position instantly! The late is known for many things not limited to his journalism career, climate change expertise, eulogy writing, cassava by products research. I will summarise all this in one sentence. A whole library has been burnt down with the passing on of this great son of Busoga and Budo Alumni! May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Oh my this is so sad! Patrick gave me a gift when I worked with him at New Vision which gift I have up now. May his soul rest in eternal peace my friend Patrick. I cannot question the Divine Order but to accept!
