The Caribbean nation was swept into disarray on Wednesday following the gangland-style murder of President Jovenel Moise. Haiti’s interim authorities have requested the deployment of a contingent of US and United Nations troops to protect key infrastructure and prevent the situation from being destabilized any further.
Haitian opposition figure Reginald Boulos hired a senior Washington lobbyist to help build up his political party and ‘encourage’ President Biden and other US leaders to support the creation of an interim Haitian government two days before President Jovenel Moise’s assassination, Politico reports, citing the lobbyist and Boulos himself.
The lobbyist, Art Estopinan, is well-known in Washington circles, with his consulting group boasting its ability to reach “succes...

Pentagon says it is deeply concerned about attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria in recent days.
The Pentagon said on Thursday it was deeply concerned about a series of attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria in recent days.
"They are using lethal weaponry. I don't know how you can say anything other than it is a serious threat," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters, according to Reuters.
On Wednesday, two rockets were fired at the US embassy inside Baghdad's Green Zone.
The embassy's anti-rocket system diverted one of the rockets and the second rocket fell near the zone's perimeter.
That attack came a day after an explosive-laden drone attacked Erbil airport in northern Iraq. The drone reportedly targeted the US base on the airport grounds.

Mr Charles said more members of the hit squad were still at large.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s remote Maluku islands on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no tsunami warning.
The shallow quake hit at 1:43 pm local time (0443 GMT) in the Banda Sea about 70 kilometers (44 miles) southeast of Amahai on the island of Seram.
Shallow quakes tend to do more damage than deep ones, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
Indonesia experiences frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions due to its position on the “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
In 2004, a devastating 9.1 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that...
